About the Drivers Screening

As a driver, your reaction time, peripheral vision, depth perception and night time vision can all be comprised by your eyesight. Besides ensuring that your vehicle is roadworthy, you also need to make sure your eyesight meets the minimum requirements stipulated by law in order to obtain your drivers license. Sometimes this may require new or updated prescription lenses.

To safely operate a vehicle on the road an individuals' field of vision and visual acuity are essential aspects to consider. This is why an eye test is necessary before obtaining your drivers license.
During a drivers screening eye test a Snellen chart is used. This chart consists of rows of alphabets stacked horizontally. Each row of alphabets gradually decreases in size as you move downwards.
In South Africa, a minimum Snellen rating is required.
The minimum visual acuity for a light motor vehicle is 6/12 (20/40) for each eye and a visual field of 120 degrees is required.
Individuals who require prescription lenses in order to pass the drivers screening must declare this on their drivers license.
